Ash cloud stretches across S America - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) The eruption of a long-dormant volcano in southern Chile has created an enormous cloud of ash that has spread hundreds of kilometres to the east, across Argentina and Uruguay. The authorities in Chile have set up a 50-kilometre exclusion area around the Chaiten volcano and evacuated at least 6,000 people.

The New York Times today published a fairly credible map of the current electoral college landscape. The tally shows John McCain with 24 states worth a total of 200 electoral votes safely in his corner while Barak Obama can sleep easy about 12 states and D.C. worth 172 electoral votes. Maj. Gen. Raymundo Ferrer, the most senior army commander in the Cotabato area on southern Mindanao island, said the scaled down presence of the 60-member Malaysian-led peace monitors might heighten already bitter family feuds.
